Spool Tire Case Study

Film Processing Application - A case in molding technique.

Issue: A Fortune 500 photographic company required a soft, non-abrasive running surface over which film would pass during its processing with little or no damage. The hard surface of conventional processing rollers had been found to cause scratches and edge abrasions. In the past, edge damage was not a major problem since it was outside the normal 70mm, 35mm or 16mm picture area. The same degree of edge damage on many of the present multi-rank films would render a high percentage of the processed film unusable. The customer's engineers designed a suitable part - a rubber, soft tire with a multi-fingered periphery mounted on the flat face of the roller to create a uniform film-supporting surface consisting of many flexible fingers. The problem was molding this part so the fingers would not tear off when coming out of the mold.

Objective: The objective was to develop a manufacturing process whereby the surface configuration of the soft-touch tire would not be damaged.

J.J. Short processes: After many prototypes and collaborating with client engineers and consulting with our toolmakers, we developed a mold whereby the tire is actually molded inside out. This way the smooth inside surface of the finished tire is on the outside, protecting the ''fingers'' during the molding process and more importantly the extraction process. The core of the mold can be easily removed and the finger-side then easily pulled from the mold with no tearing or loss of the required multi-fingered periphery. The extracted tire is then flipped inside out so the fingers are now exposed and the dimensions are proper for the plastic spool to be used.

Results: Revolutionary! By developing a molding technique that vastly reduced the number of rejected parts, we have gone on to manufacture over 50 different styles and shapes of photofinishing tires employing the same methodology. Today we provide a broad range of soft-touch finger, smooth surface, ribbed and bar type tires in several materials and sizes (16mm to 70mm) as replacement parts for a wide range of photo finishing lab equipment.
